Thousands of Dolls / Plushies Laid To Rest In Japan Buddhist Ceremony

Temple founded centuries ago helps out with unique modern ceremony in Osaka Prefecture.

Each year, monks from Shinguji, a temple in the town of Yao, Osaka Prefecture that was founded in the late 17th century, hold a massive funeral service. Last year’s ceremony was to celebrate and put to rest more than 50,000 individuals.

Thankfully, the ceremony wasn’t prompted by a natural disaster, tragic accident, or outbreak of disease. Instead, it was the latest iteration of what’s become a Yao tradition, the Doll Memorial Service.

The term “doll” here is used in a broad sense, as prayers for stuffed animals/plushies are also offered at the ceremony.

The Doll Memorial Service, organized by Yao funeral service company Hakkoden, has been being held on an annual basis for more than 20 years now. The idea for it came about when Hakkoden started getting inquires from local adult residents who had dolls and stuffed animals from their childhood that they were no longer playing with, but which they didn’t feel right just chucking in the trash like so much unsentimental fabric.

And so it came to be that Hakkoden began organizing a yearly memorial service, which is customarily held in the fall. The first year there were about 3,000 dolls, and in 2024 they received 50,000, as partially shown in the photo below.

The ceremony is held at Hakkoden’s Minami Uematsu funeral parlor, with the dolls and stuffed animals respectfully arranged at the front of the hall. As awareness of the event has spread, dolls have been submitted not only by residents of the town, but also from people living elsewhere in Osaka Prefecture and even in other parts of Japan. Dolls can be brought to the funeral parlor starting a week before the ceremony, and can now also be sent by mail to Hakkoden.

A strip of paper with a farewell message, chosen by the doll’s owner, is written on a strip of paper for each doll being memorialized, and incense can be offered for them as well. There is a fee for the service, which this year is 3,000 yen (US$20) per doll, in order to cover costs and also be put toward donations to local resident welfare programs.

This year’s Doll Memorial Service is scheduled for October 26

Focus. Sit inside the lotus. Monkey and Mindful.

Its good day for mindfulness plus unwind-full-bliss.

Nothing to find, no eye, no thought of shh… persists.

Remain focused! Dont let the monkey mind escape the lotus.

Come back monkey! You thought I wouldn’t notice!

Now have a seat. Breathe in. Breathe out. Repeat.

Recite these mantras, escape away with me.

Give me yer hand. Off to the pure land.

Mindful and monkey together… To serve the world now…

A meditation poem.

Each breath is a blessing, Resting your mind

Calming you and guiding you with ease

Every moment is taken with awareness of all sensations

Let the daily tasks of life become ones meditation

Always aware and returning to a breath of peace

If hungry? Eat. If tired? Sleep. Simplify life

For example… What possessions do we truly need?

To question is zen… To question is mindfulness

Ask yourself why one would cling to worldly possessions

But let not a possession cloud ones mind either

Return to your breath upon every reflection

To let go of ones worldly attachments will end the suffering

With everything being impermanent, why attach?

Choosing to move on with mindfulness and peace

Think of others and what you may have to offer them for their needs

A childhood saying… Do unto others what you wish done unto you

And after that thought, we return to the breath once again…

In… and out…

Focusing on the breath, let your thoughts come and go,

Do not dwell on them

Let the thought go…

In… and out…

Samsara or nirvana

The Buddhist tibetan prayer flags on the top of mountain in Daocheng, Sichuan Province, Tibet of China.

I dream of the promise land; where peace abides

Mountains streamline across the sky

Prayer flags cross the trails on my path to freedom

I am given help along my jouney

Compassion for all the sentient beings on earth

This is my path and it was always meant for me

Rebirth; Samsara

Or a heavenly Nirvana

Sobriety

Sobriety was something I had previously thought to be unattainable; the anxiety of life too much to bear without substance, without alcohol. I needed it for almost anything and usually there was no stopping me from obtaining it; and always wanting more. A vicious cycle of dependence which could not be broken. Thank god I was wrong.

I am currently 8 months sober and the benefits have reached and blessed every aspect of life. I have less anxiety, less illnesses, less arguments, less confusion, less injury, less financial burdens and I could go on forever. Most importantly I have accepted buddha and my sobriety go hand in hand on this path that I have chosen.

There are so many ways to conquer demons of which used to control my life. Im finding myself in meditation everywhere I go and every day that I stay. It is very important for my day to day balance to practice the teachings of various meditations and perhaps my writings can lead others to finding a healthier balance in life regardless of religious belief or path.

Thats all for now.

About me. A return

Its been a very long time since I have been away from WordPress. Id like to come back to this and reintroduce myself. My name is Nina and I’m 31 years old. Im a Buddhist, a step mother, an artist and a trans woman. I started this blog while living in a homeless shelter many years ago and I can remember walking across the street to the coffee shop to do my daily blogging every morning. I had originally thought i would simply write about living on the streets, but. It became much more than that.

Im returning now as many things have changed. I got married and am looking after a young one. I am sober. For the first time in my life. Something like 8 or 9 months. It has been easy but it hasn’t. I am very thankful for this morning; an opportunity to speak and place another step on this path. The path of buddha, sobriety, motherhood, art and most importantly love.

Im not sure where to begin but I suppose I already have. So since I have been gone; budhism has truly become my path. I have realized there is no place for alcohol in a buddhist. I see the dhamma now as the only path to be on. I am also a visual artist. A graffiti writer and painter. I am shocked and happy to say that art is my profession yet am still but what you would call the starving artist. But I am happy.

Sobriety was taken away from me by the age of 13. So 17 years of usage which is more than half of my life and pretty much the entirety of my adult life. I have found new ways to enjoy life, to cope with pain and anxiety. As i write i feel like the lotus blooming from the mud.

Hello everyone. Im here again. Im back

Love Nina

A prayer ….

Walking this path I count my steps

Carefully count my breaths

Walking straight and mindful

Vowing to bring fourth kindness

Drawing another breath I focuss

The simple motions

Eliminating negative emotions

Om nami padme hum

Loving living lotus compassion

Grant me the needed wisdom to encapsul

So i may bring joy while my steps

Carefully counting every breath
